Chrissie Douglas, Pearl Specialist, Designer and Founder of Coleman Douglas Pearls

Chrissie Douglas hails from a long line of jewellers. Her mother’s family were natural Scottish pearl specialists who founded A&J Smith Jewellers in Aberdeen in the late 1800s.  Born in Mexico to artistic parents, she grew up appreciating the importance of colour and texture which laid the foundation for her expertise in jewellery design.

In 1993, she travelled throughout Southeast Asia where she became fascinated by the charm and mystery of pearls.  During her stay in Hong Kong, she studied the ancient art of stringing from the masters, and became proficient in the craft.  Later that year, she began experimenting in pearl jewellery design, and was crowned the ‘Pearl Queen’ by the Financial Times.  The young designer began making bespoke jewellery and wholeselling her creations globally, and soon her company, Coleman Douglas Pearls was born.

Chrissie’s innovative and fresh use of pearls with diamonds and semi-precious stones and other more unusual materials like leather, wood and feathers resulted in her appointment as a named designer for “Iridesse founded by Tiffany & Company” in 2004.  In 2005, Chrissie was commissioned by Perles de Tahiti to create a line of pearl jewellery that would defy the conventional concept of the twin set and pearls look.  She was also a featured designer in the South Seas Pearl Consortium’s White Magic exhibition.

Today, Chrissie is acknowledged as a leading authority in the field of pearls, and has won numerous design awards.  She shares her knowledge and passion for pearls as a guest lecturer at the Gemmological Institute of America (GIA), The Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A), Victoria and Albert Museum, and venues such as Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saison for charity.

Her beautiful designs were featured in the Natural History Museum of New York’s touring ‘Pearls’ exhibition, and are on permanent exhibition at the National History Museum’s Earth Treasury section in London.  Her pieces can be seen on royalty, state figureheads and celebrities, and her designs are featured regularly in leading lifestyle and fashion media.
