Most of the designs in our pearl collections at Coleman Douglas have our signature pearl clasp, an innovative departure for pearl jewellery design, the pearl toggle clasp is far simpler to put on and take off than a traditional metal clasp and is ideal for the busy woman of today, it proved so popular that it has become our signature.
Our signature pearl clasp came into being over 25 years ago. Mrs B, one of our clients suffered from arthritis, she found the normal workings of a metal clasp too fiddly. At the time good magnetic clasps were not easily available. Mrs B asked Chrissie our designer, if Coleman Douglas Pearls could come up with an easier clasp. Something, she said, like a toggle but thicker…. The result is our signature clasp a naturally formed long cultured freshwater pearl, drilled halfway so that it acts as a hinge within a lasso of tiny seed pearls. It is easy to put on even blindfolded and it is very secure, so secure that 95% of the designs are Coleman Douglas Pearls are finished with the pearl toggle. If you have not tried it do pop into the studio at 42 Beauchamp Place to check it out and the moral of the story is if you listen to your customers you get GREAT INSPIRATION.
Here are a few of our favourite pieces with our pearl clasp, can you guess what they are before linking into the image?
Pearls are the most sensual and flattering of gems. They beautify their owner, reflecting a soft glow that enhances the natural harmony of our features. It is therefore essential to maintain the gentle lustre that has been so painstakingly created by nature. Pearls improve their lustre when worn next to the skin as the oils of the person wearing them keep them moisturized.
Important points to consider in caring for your pearls
- Wear your pearls as much as possible.
- Wipe pearls after use to remove any trace of perspiration or perfume.
- Keep pearls in silk or chamois leather when not in use, away from diamonds or metal.
- Give your pearls an annual check-up – look for thread stretching, discolouration or fraying.
- If you wear your pearls often, have them cleaned by a pearl expert once a year.
Things to avoid
- Keep your pearls away from perfume, hairspray and fake tan.
- Don’t wear pearls for aerobic exercise or swimming in treated water as they are damaged by excessive perspiration and chemicals.
- Do not test the genuineness of a pearl by biting it with your teeth.
- Never store pearls in a hanging position as it can stretch and damage the silk.
- A storage place that is too dry or airless, for example, a sealed plastic bag, will dry the pearl.
Why not try our pearl essence perfume that has been made with zero alcohol with natural oils that actually enhance your pearls. We’ve had fantastic feedback on it that the smell lingers through to the next day. More info – click here.

Our designer Chrissie Douglas has won numerous design awards since starting her career, especially in her Tahitian pearl designs. Chrissie’s aim has always been to offer an investment in style and value by utilising her expert pearl knowledge coupled with an excellent network of suppliers. Her innovative and fresh use of pearls with semi-precious stones and other more unusual materials like leather, silk gauze, wood and felt have produced unique designs.
Out of all the ranges that Chrissie has designed our favourite for the winter has to be the Warrior pearl collection. This collection never goes out of fashion as it is so edgy it enables the wearer to go full on Rock Chick or just to slightly toughen up an otherwise girly outfit. Mainly made from knotted leather and Tahitian pearls this range sure knows how to make an impact. Wear the Tahitian Warrior armband and earrings with your most feminine outfit this Christmas party season and you will be guaranteed to wow your friends.
Our fine jewellery range is also perfect for all the glitz and glam of this time of year. Enhance your natural sparkle with our cognac diamond and south sea necklace – a great transitional piece through the seasons picking up on the golds of Christmas but also delicate enough to wear in the spring and summer. Other great investment pieces include our Tahitian pearl, diamond and rainbow moonstone pendant and matching earrings. The moonstone has a gorgeous adularescence effect where the light travels across the gem changing its colour from apparently colourless to gorgeous blues.
For other final flourishes to your party outfit please bring a photo of you wearing the outfit along to our showrooms where our pearl team can then source the perfect finishing item. Whether you choose to go for an amazing statement necklace or a classic pair of earrings, here at Coleman Douglas Pearls we’ll have the piece for you!
Christmas is nearly upon us with just over a month to go and although some of our pearl team are excited others are really wishing it either wasn’t so close (how on earth is everything going to get done?!) or to just take a break from planning the festivities. Either way Coleman Douglas Pearls have the perfect plan for you – get the snacks ready its Movie night! And because we love all things pearls we thought we would mention a couple of our favourite guilty pleasure films featuring pearls!
First up is Chalet Girl featuring our pearls! This film is a perfect winter choice, no mention of Christmas, but enough snow to make you feel a little excited about the season again. A classic RomCom, especially appealing to any snow sports lovers out there! The pieces worn by the girls in the film are everyday wardrobe staples seeing you through every eventuality you will encounter in life. All three of the main leading ladies can be seen wearing our pearls with Felicity Jones wearing our single classic freshwater strand, Brooke Shields wearing our diamond huggies and Tamsin Egerton wearing our freshwater pendant.
Next is The Princess Diaries . . . . now I know what you’re thinking but hear us out! This film is perfect not only to watch with your girlfriends but also with your daughter. Not only does Julie Andrews live up to her Practically Perfect name but it is the perfect mix of humour and lessons of life, love and friendship. Pearls again feature heavily as any good queen will know an outfit is not complete without pearls. We especially love the mabe pearl earrings Julie Andrews wears and you can pair them with a South Sea strand – you really will feel like royalty!
If you want any further information about our pearls seen on screen please pop into our London jewellery showroom where we have a wide range of pearl jewellery to suit every occasion.
Pearls are stunning in their own right and here at Coleman Douglas Pearls we believe the addition of coloured gemstones can also really lift a piece and give a new take on pearl jewellery. Our bespoke service is the perfect way to design a totally new piece for yourself or to give an old piece a new lease of life.
Topaz is one of the birthstones for November and is most commonly thought of as being blue in colour. Although natural blue topaz does exist in nature, it is rare and most of the blue topaz that you see has actually been irradiated to get its hue. Topaz is colourless but also comes in shades of brown, yellow, orange and pink depending on impurity elements or structural defects within the crystal structure. The name topaz is thought to have two different origins; the first coming from the word “Topazios”, an old Greek name for the island now called Zabargad, and although the island never produced topaz, it did produce similar coloured minerals. People just didn’t have the resources to differentiate the two. The second origin could be from the ancient Sanskrit language from the word topas or tapaz, meaning “fire.”
Citrine is the second birthstone for November and is already incorporated into a lot of our pearl designs. Citrine is the yellow variety of quartz and ranges in shade from pale yellow to deep orange resulting from the amount of iron in the crystal structure. The name is derived from the Latin “citrina” meaning yellow and it is thought this is the origin for the french word “citron” meaning lemon. Citrine’s have been confused with Topaz for centuries due to their similar colours and lack of obvious inclusions. Most citrine on the market is actually heat treated amethyst, although it does occur naturally.
We want to pass on our love for gemstones and pearls in jewellery and would love for you to book a design consultation with us at our pearl jewellery store in London. We are open Monday – Saturday from 11am – 7pm.
Coleman Douglas Pearls adores halloween! Not only is there chocolate and sweeties aplenty (we currently have Prestat chocolate truffles in store for all our lovely customers) but our dark coloured pearls really put us in a playful spooky mood. None more so than our amazing Night Shadow collection. This collection is inspired by the striking quality of light in darkness. It contrasts the sensuous feel of pearls with their casual opulence in shades of peacock black.
These pearls get their colour after a pink pearl is treated with silver nitrate changing the colour to this gloriously dark hue. This collection is bang on trend with lots of the catwalks being dominated with dark velvety coloured hues which complement the pearls perfectly. From simple single strands to more statement pieces we have the item for you!
Also getting in on the dark theme are our stunning tahitian pearls! These are perfect for those of you looking to upgrade to a luxury spooky event this time next week. Think Morticia Addams as your fancy dress inspiration, dark, sexy and the most glamorous woman in the room. Either layer up your tahitian row necklaces or keep it simple with a pendant – you will have every woman in the room wishing they had made more of an effort that a pointy hat or devil horns!
Whichever pearls you decide to wear please send us a photo of you looking glam on social media – follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!
October is breast cancer awareness month – something that all of us here at Coleman Douglas Pearls are very passionate about supporting. Raising awareness for the disease is very important to us so we have come up with a few ways for you to raise awareness at home! Firstly Breast Cancer Care are holding The Big Pink on 14th October this year. This is the perfect opportunity for you to gather your friends and family and host a pink tea extravaganza!
The theme would obviously be Think Pink with a pink dress code, pink pearls, pink food, pink drinks . . . the list of possibilities is endless! Make sure you register to get your free kit and ask everyone to donate generously of course. Either host it at home or convince your boss to turn your workplace into a pink paradise for the day (mention charity and cakes and watch the idea take off!).
On a similar theme are bakesales at the school gates (guaranteed to raise money as kids+cakes+amazing cause . . . ) why not even get the school to help and get the children involved! If baking cakes is not a possibility maybe decorating could be? Or even just getting them to make decorations in class for the aforementioned party could be a great way of getting the younger generation involved and raising awareness.
However if your feeling active why not take part in one of the hundreds of sporting events across the country and raise money that way. Whether it is a 5km race for life, marathon, or even a triathlon, pull on your sports kit and raise money for a good cause! And don’t forget to wear your pink pearls with pride as you cross the finishing line! Also keep your eyes out for our own special take at our pearl jewellery store located at 42 Beauchamp Place, London, SW3 1NX.
