Queen Victoria and Royal Jewels

Victoria itvWe have been struck with Royal fever here at Coleman Douglas Pearls as we are absolutely hooked on ITV’s new period drama Victoria! Apparently it is not far from the truth with Victoria’s diaries being used heavily in the research to the show. And oh the jewelleryPearls galore on top of stunning pieces still in existence today!

Below is a brief introduction to a couple of our favourite Victorian jewels.

_GeorgeIVStateDiademUp first is the George IV State Diadem made in 1820 originally for King George IV himself! The diadem features a set of 4 crosses pattée alternating with 4 bouquets of roses, thistles, and shamrocks. The motifs are set on a band of diamond scrollwork between two bands of pearls.
The front cross is set with a 4 carat yellow diamond, and the piece features an incredible 1,333 diamonds in all. This diadem was a firm favourite of Victoria’s and she even wore it to the christening of two of her children! It is also popular with our current Queen who reserves it for state occasions and to and from the opening of parliament.

queen in pearlsNext is Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee Necklace given to her in 1887 by a committee of ladies who were raising money for a commemorative statue of Victoria’s late husband Prince Albert. Having raised far more than was needed for the statue it was agreed that the excess money was to go to the St. Katherine’s Fund for Nurses and for a necklace to be made for Victoria. However, some of the committee did not think that the money should be spent on a necklace. With the group divided and Victoria apparently fuming that she would not get her necklace this was the £5000 compromise reached!
Made from gold, diamonds and pearls it features a central quatrefoil diamond motif with a large central pearl, topped by a crown and underlined with a drop pearl. Ever practical this necklace is a multi tasking piece with the central piece and the six largest trefoils can be worn as brooches. Again this necklace has found a fan with Queen Elizabeth II who often pairs it with the Grand Duchess Vladimir’s Tiara with pearls.

So now you know a bit about the jewellery…which is your favourite piece?!

The Queen turns 90 (again)!

The Queen 90With the Queen’s Official Birthday celebrations just around the corner, all of us here at Coleman Douglas Pearls want wish the Queen a very Happy Birthday (again)! This did get us all thinking however, what do you get the girl who has it all?! Over the years the queen has received a wide variety of gifts from the very generous to the bizarre.

Kate weddingOne of the more significant presents that the Queen received was the Cartier Halo Tiara – the same tiara that The Duchess of Cambridge wore on her wedding day. It is gorgeous and has a lovely family history to go with it. Three weeks before he was to become King, the then Duke of York went to Garrard to buy his wife a tiara (as you do). After the surprise abdication of his brother, the Duke of York became George VI. A few years later he and his wife Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother gifted that very tiara to our current Queen on her 18th birthday after which she wore it often.

queens horseAnother treasured gift came in a slightly more unusual form – Burmese the horse! As the Queen is well known for her love of horses, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police gave her Burmese as a present which was ridden by Her Majesty at the Trooping of the Colour from 1969 to 1986. As well as horses the queen has also received beavers, sloths and even an elephant.

When it emerged that after struggling to think of a present, the Duchess of Cambridge made The Queen some homemade chutney for Christmas, we put together some slightly more glamorous birthday ideas for the Queen in your life. We all know the Queen loves her pearl earrings and these South Sea pearls would put a smile on any girls face. You can never go wrong with a classic strand of pearls, and this tiara would make any little princess’s day!

Aquamarine – The feel good stone

1648
What better way to celebrate that Spring is here than checking out the gorgeous blues of aquamarine, a firm favorite of one of our Pearl Team here at Coleman Douglas Pearls.

Aquamarine is the birthstone of March and is said to bring the wearer good feelings and lasting relationships. It is the blue member of the Beryl family that also includes Emerald which is the green variety.

NE1753 lowThe name aquamarine comes from the Latin “aqua marina” meaning water of the sea. Aquamarines’ blue colour comes from iron impurities within a colourless beryl crystal (goshenite).  Unlike their emerald counterparts, aquamarines are often totally free from impurities and have excellent transparency and clarity. In maritime legend, aquamarine was said to have come from mermaid treasure chests and is therefore considered a lucky stone for sailors. In ancient times sailors were given aquamarines to ensure a safe passage on their voyages and also to ward off sea-sickness.

Aquamarines are one of the Queens favorite stones and she is especially fond of her  Brazilian Aquamarine Parure Tiara. The set was a gift from the Brazilian prime minister on behalf of his country upon the Queen’s coronation in 1953. It is rumored to have taken over a year to match the exquisitely coloured stones and upon seeing how much the Queen enjoyed them the government continued to source matching stones. In 1958 the Brazilian government had collected enough to present the Queen with a second gift of a large brooch and bracelet to add to her set which she still wears today.

RING treat tuesdayWe have numerous designs here at our Beauchamp Place London showroom incorporating aquamarine and pearls. If you can’t find exactly what you are looking for, do not hesitate to contact us, so that we may create your own bespoke design. The Pearl Queen

‘The pearl is the queen of gems and the gem of queens’.
WIDE ss rowThis last Wednesday markedQueen and Prince the historic moment when Queen Elizabeth II became the longest reigning monarch, overtaking her great great granny, Queen Victoria.
One photo that swept the national newspapers was the one on the right, where Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth are recreating a photograph that was taken at the beginning of her reign.
…check out her pearls

Queen and Prince 2A keen ‘pearl’o’holic’ from the start, Queen Elizabeth has clearly passed her passion on to her daughter Princess Anne, who when visiting our Pearl Company, wearing a pair of stunning pearl drop earrings, mentioned how she ‘…loved playing with granny’s pearls’ when she was younger.

The Hollywood Buzz!

Clooney wedding
There has been a buzz of excitement in Hollywood that has got everyone talking.
Firstly the newly released photographs of The Clooney’s wedding, and then Angelina Jolie becoming a Dame…what more do you need!

The Clooney’s wedding was always going to be a ‘who’s who’ of the Celebrity world, so that main question on everyone’s lips was ‘What will Amal’s wedding dress be like?’

Pearls, pearls and yet more pearls!
They were everywhere.
Clooney wedding 2
From stunning diamond and pearl drop earrings to a pearl embroidered Oscar de la Renta gown. The look was breathtaking.
The soft and gentle lustre of the pearls married (excuse the pun!) beautifully with the delicate couture lace, giving the traditional style dress a modern twist.
clooney wedding 3
While flicking through the images of Amal in her gown, it reminded me of Jackie O’s wedding dress.
Like Amal, Jackie’s dress was off the shoulder with a delicate lace vale cascading down the back.

A keen pearl girl who was famous for saying, ‘Pearls are always appropriate’, Jackie chose a simple, elegant single strand pearl necklace to accompany her gown.565.Torso Image

Ascot
Every year the hats seem to get bigger, brighter and Bolder!

Ascot Amanda HoldingThe second style that caught our eye was seen on Amanda Holden.
We loved the 1920s touch to her outfit, with the large coral coloured flower detail.

One thing this outfit does lack is some pearls. Perhaps some classic large pearl studs peeping though, or a long freshwater pearl necklace?

Ascot BIG HAT
Now it would be a crime not to mention this lady!

Ms Rose went to town with her hat creation. Twice the width of her and a third of her height… this hat difies gravity!

Perfectly matching her dress and exceptionally long nails this hat was the largest we have seen all week.
The perfect hat if you want to get noticed and obstruct the spectators view of the racing!
Warning, do not wear this hat if it is windy!

Did you know that you can still find stunning natural pearls in England? …Scotland to be specific!
The beauty of these natural pearls were well known in ancient times, with many historians claiming that it was these stunning pearls that contributed to Julius Caesar invading England.

If you look back iElizabeth I - Armada Portraitn history at the portraits of our Royal family, they show a feast of pearls adorning both the men and women alike.
Elizabeth I in particular was a ‘Pearl’a’holic’, stopping at nothing to attain more pearls.
As you can see from the Armada Portrait Elizabeth I is wearing pearl earrings, pearl necklaces, a pearl headdress and pearl encrusted clothing.

Coleman Douglas Pearls
Our current royal family shows that this pearl ‘trend’ is far from over, with Queen Elizabeth II, HRH The Princess Royal and The Duchess of Cambridge continuously being seen with pearls.

Queen Elizabeth II is always wearing her gorgeous multi-strand natural pearl necklace, accompanied by her beautiful large white pearl stud earrings with diamond detail, while HRH The Princess Royal visited Coleman Douglas Pearls where Chrissie Douglas, our Pearl Specialist and Designer, and her shared their love of pearls.Coleman Douglas Pearls

So will this pearl ‘trend’ ever end? No!
The reason pearls will never go out of fashion is because they enhance their wearer.
As light touches the pearl it passes through the multiple layers of nacre before before being reflected back out, giving a subtle, soft up-light onto the face above.

Pearls make one feel as if they are part and parcel of every day dressing sensibly. They are not solely glitzy adornments but ones which are accessible to everyone, and so they should be.’ – Jenny Kingsley
