FebruaryFabulous, Fresh and Free! 3 things that most people aspire to be.
Our Coleman Douglas Pearls London Team have been busy getting together the ingredients to help you on your way to a F.F.F February!
The 3 main ingredients?
Pearls, Acai Berries and Pearlspearls are doubly important which is why they have been included twice!

So why are pearls so important in making you feel Fabulous?
It’s all to do with light refraction. Have you ever noticed how a girl looks instantly brighter once a strand of pearls has been placed around her neck? This is down to the light refracting around the pearl before reflecting back out onto the wearers face… It’s the best kept beauty secret of all time! And let’s be honest, if you look great, you will feel FABULOUS!

‘I love the fact that the pearl lustre makes their wearer automatically look radiant.’ – Chrissie Douglas

February 2To feel Fresh you need to start on the inside, which is why we recommend the Acai berry.
(Ahh-sah-ee) is a Brazilian berry which is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats, and …it tastes delicious! Taking the frozen pulp of the acai berry, blend it with frozen fruits and coconut milk to make a huge bowl of scoopable, ice-cream-like consistency goodness. The perfect sweet craving treat that is not only healthy but also filling.

Now lets look at the Free factor…Free from Fashion Faux pas!
Pearls are a timeless gem that have been seen on numerous catwalks throughout the centuries, and are as popular now as they were in the time of Cleopatra, with celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, Princess Diana, Michelle Obama, Grace Jones, Angelina Jolie, Emma Watson, Rihanna, Kate Perry, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lawrence, Karl Lagerfeld and Pierce Brosnan to name but a few, all wearing pearls!

Pearls play the same role in women’s jewellery collections that the little black dress does in their wardrobes – it is the all-time classic.’ – Lucia van der Post. FT How To Spend It

So now you know how to attack February, have fun with it!

The Diamond Factor

‘Diamonds are forever’… unless it’s not a diamond!!
But how can you tell?
The Pearl Team at Coleman Douglas Pearls shares a few basic points to bear in mind when shopping for diamonds.
The best way to find out if a diamond is genuine or not is by trying to scratch it, heating it or looking at it through a microscope. Although these pointers are great, they aren’t the most practical when purchasing a stone…no retailer will thank you for scratching their stones, heating them up or getting out a huge microscope from your handbag and checking them out on the shop floor! …a jeweller’s loop would be better!
Diamonds 2
Fortunately there are 3 more subtle ways of finding out the million dollar questions.

Resting Soothes Everyone

Diamonds 3
When looking at a real diamond you should not be able to see through it, this is because of the way that diamonds refract and bend the light, giving the stone a beautiful sparkle.
When looking at cubic zirconia (CZ), glass or quartz stones, they too will have a sparkle, but it will never match up to the brilliance of a diamond.

diamond 3Sparkle:
Take your diamond into the light and see what it looks like. A real diamond should have a white sparkle throwing off a few flashes of colour known as fire. A high quality diamond will sparkle with a grey and white colour known as brilliance.

Chrissie PrlSpec
If you are ever in doubt about the stone seek an expert.
But if you don’t have time for that take a long hard look at how it sparkles.

‘We are all stars and we deserve to twinkle’ – Marilyn Monroe

The Monroe effect!

Monroe 1
When you think of Marilyn Monroe most people instantly think of her singing ‘Happy Birthday Mr President’ to JFK. But as it is The Pearl Month we have slightly adapted the words…

Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday Mr Pearlfect, Happy Birthday to you!

Continuing our ‘Pearl Family‘ walk, we will be focusing our attention on Akoya Pearls.
Marilyn Monroe was given an Akoya Pearl Necklace from Arthur Miller on their wedding day, and continued to wear it long after the divorce.

Akoya Pearls originate in oysters farmed in Japan. They are created when a technician implants a spherical resin or mother of pearl bead into the pearl bearing oyster alongside an epithelial cell graft that has come from the mantle tissue of a donor oyster. The graft forms a pearl sac around the bead implant which is then slowly covered in layer upon layer of nacre, eventually forming a pearl.

EAAKDS care of pearls
True or False…Akoya pearls are born in pale blue/grey colours?
TRUE, although these colours are rarely found for sale in the market.

Cinderella 2
True or False…Akoya pearls take 1.5 to 3 years to be made?
TRUE. Originally experts recommended that the bead/irritant should be left in the host oyster for three years. At present the accepted time is 1 ½ years, which results in a good 0.5mm nacre coating.

The Hollywood Love Letters

Monroe 1There has always been an air of mystery surrounding Hollywood stars. What are they really like? Where do they live? Who would be invited to their dream dinner party?
One star in particular that oozes mystery is the late Marilyn Monroe.
The American actress, model and singer, stared in a number of successful films during the 1950s and early 1960s, such as ‘The Seven Year Itch’, ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’, ‘Some Like It Hot’, ‘The Prince and the Showgirl’ and ‘How to Marry a Millionaire’.
But how much do we really know about the Her, other than the fact that she loved pearls.

Next month a selection of Marilyn Monroe’s Monroe 2private love letters, mementos and documents, never seen before, will be auctioned in Beverly Hills.
Letters to Marilyn from Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Jane Russell, Joe DiMaggio – her second husband, and Arthur Miller – her third husband, are amongst the 300 items going under the hammer.

Do you have a love letter at home?
Perhaps it says:
‘I love you and want to be with you’ – DiMaggio to Monroe
‘My Darling, My Darling.’ – Monroe to Miller

Monroe 4If you aren’t good with words then we at Coleman Douglas Pearls have the perfect solution for you…Our Morse Code Collection.
Made up of pearl bracelets and pearl necklaces, each piece spells out ‘I love you’ in code.

.. // .-.. / – / …-  /. // ..-  (I Love U)

Monroe 3
Using long Biwa pearls and irregular freshwater pearls or freshwater M&M pearls, we have created the ‘dashes’ and ‘dots’ that make up the secret code.

Perhaps you have another message you would like secretly included into a necklace or bracelet? If this is the case make an appointment with our Pearl Guru, Chrissie Douglas, and start chatting through the designs.

Hollywood Jewels

Lauren BacallHollywood…glitz, glamor and gemstones!

Do you dream of living that ‘lifestyle’? Well… now’s your opportunity to get one step closer.
Next year Bonhams will be auctioning off a huge variety of items that once belonged to the late Lauren Bacall. Eight Henry Moore sculptures, a few David Hockney and Pablo Picasso paintings, and a variety of breathtaking jewellery…pearl jewellery.
This is an auction not to be missed!

lauren Bacall 2Throughout her life she collected a stunning collection of jewels that would make every girl go weak at the knees.
Having starred in ‘How to Marry a Millionaire’ alongside Marilyn Monroe, and ‘Designing Woman’ with Gregory Peck, she graced the same Red Carpet as several other iconic ladies, Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly, to mention a few!
Known for her husky voice and cat-like green eyes, Bacall, like so many other Hollywood celebrities of the time was a keen pearl girl.

lauren Bacall 4What is it about pearls that makes them so irresistible to Hollywood celebrities?
Perhaps their timeless appeal?
The ability to go with everything? …both good reasons I’ll grant you, but I recon it’s the pearls ability to enhance the wearers natural beauty, for who wouldn’t want to look their best on The Red Carpet!

How do they do this?
A pearl is made up of many layers of nacre. When light touches a pearl it gets refracted around the layers before being reflected out, giving a soft up light onto the face above…genius!

Known for her acting talent, fashion forward style, beauty and elegance, Grace Kelly was and still is to many, a style icon.

Grace was a keen pearl lover, making her feelings for the gem known world wide, famously saying:
‘I favour pearls on screen and in my private life.’
Grace Kelly2
When you look at images of Grace Kelly she is hardly ever seen without her pearl jewellery.
For this reason we at Coleman Douglas Pearls, along with all the other pearl aficionados of the world, have high expectations for the ‘pearl show’ that should (we hope) unfold on screen in the film ‘Grace of Monaco’, starring Nicole Kidman, Time Roth and André Penvern, to name but a few.

Coleman Douglas Pearls
But why are pearls so popular?
The main beauty of pearls lies in the fact that they enhance the beauty of their wearer.

How does this happen?
It is all down to light. Light gets refracted into the pearls and then reflected back out onto the wearer, giving him or her a soft delicate uplift of light.
This beauty secret has been recognised since the beginning of civilisation with world leaders doing pretty much anything, even murder, to get there hands on pearls.

Our Pearl Showroom, Coleman Douglas Pearlslocated at 42 Beauchamp Place, London, SW3 1NX, is full of stunning pearl jewellery collections ready to be purchased, allowing you the opportunity to own beautiful pearls without having to murder someone!
